There are three types of thermostats: programmable, digital non-programmable, and mechanical/manual.   The manual or mechanical thermostats require a manual setting.  Meaning, every time you want the temperature higher or lower, you need to set the temperature.  The temperature setting might not be very exact and give you a margin of error.  For example, you wouldn’t be able to set the temperature exactly on 72, or 69.5, instead you choose a close range.  A manual thermostat is best for people who spend a major part of their day at home and might need to change the temperature often depending on the time of the day or how cold or hot they feel.  Manual thermostats are becoming less frequent, as many lean towards the programmable and non-programmable digital thermostats where the majority of my reviews will be focused on.

A digital non-programmable thermostat acts very similarly to a manual one in that it has to be set manually.  But the temperature reading and set on these thermostats are far more accurate and give you the convenience of easy to read LCD display.  The problem with these thermostats, however, is that one needs to remember to change them.  For example, if you prefer to turn off your heater or lower it during winter nights to save energy, you will have to remember to do it manually every night.

A programmable thermostat is the best thermostat for saving money on your energy bill.  Moreover, once programmed according to your lifestyle, you very seldom have to make changes.   The best programmable thermostat has flexible program settings.  One programming option is a 7-day program which allows you to choose a unique program for each day of the week with up to four periods per day.  This option is great for people with very busy schedules.  5-1-1 programming allows a person to have one setting for the weekdays and a separate one for each of the weekend days.  The 5-2 setting also allows for different programming options for the weekday and the weekend, but it is programmed for both weekdays together and not individually.  And finally, the one-week setting allows a different program for each week.  Especially helpful with those who travel often.  There also is WiFi-enabled thermostat in some of the model which is very convenient.

There are a few things to pay attention to when buying your thermostat:

  • the model – The recommended models from a thermostat review source would generally include models with high scores, however, pay attention to the recommended models as some models with high scores do not make the list due to their brand’s reputation on performance and repair issues.
  • compatibility – make sure the thermostat you’re buying will work with your heating/cooling system as while most thermostats work with common cooling and heating systems, some might have exceptions.

Below is a simple and easy to navigate list to help you purchase your next ideal/best thermostat Labor Day Deals 2021!

Google Nest Temperature Sensor

My brother told me about the learning thermostat that he had installed in his home. He told me that I really needed to check these things out because they are pretty cool and can save a homeowner quite a bit of money in energy bills each year. I was not completely sold on the idea that a thermostat could actually save me as much money as he was saying, but I thought that I would check it out just to be sure.

I did manage to find some great resources that provided me with quite a bit of information about the learning thermostat. From what I read, they’re basically a one up on a programmable thermostat. They have proven to save homeowners as much as 33% on their heating and cooling bills in a year. That was pretty impressive to me.

Some of the features really caught my attention. First and foremost, I would be able to work on the programming of the thermostat from my computer, tablet computer or smartphone. There are apps for mobiles and web use that help you monitor the home heat and cooling schedule. This app does more than allow you to change the settings; it provides you with a lot of useful information that will help you learn how to save money.

Some of the features include:

The Auto-Schedule: This feature will adjust your home’s temperature as it gains data from your regular use. Once it has a decent amount of data stored, it will adapt the home temperature to what your preferences have proven to be.

Auto-Away: There are sensors built into the thermostat that will tell it if the house is empty. Once it has determined that the house is empty, it will automatically adjust to keep the home at an energy-saving temperature.

Airwave: This feature leaves the fan blowing after the AC unit has turned off. It will push the remaining cool air out of the ductwork. This way, the air continues to circulate through the home and keeps the temperature at a comfortable level.

Energy History: You will be able to learn when your system is using the most energy. You will be able to make changes to your heating and cooling schedule to try to reduce energy consumption each month. You may not even realize how much money you are losing when you do not pay attention to the use of home heating and cooling system.

On top of all of those features, I was impressed with the fact that the program will remind me of any maintenance that needs to be done on the HVAC system in my home. I get reminders to change the filter, have tune-ups and it alerts me when the system is not functioning properly so I can call and have it repaired.

All of these awesome features, along with a few others were pretty much what persuaded me into thinking about buying a learning thermostat for my home. It would be neat to use it and pay close attention to my utility bills to see if it does save me as much money as it claims to.
