Product Overview:

The Dell XPS comes in a few configurations with only two real choices, the CPU and solid-state drive (SSD). It starts at $999 for the Intel Core i5 with a 128 GB SSD all the way up to $1499 for the i7 equipped with the 256 GB SSD. Dell has mentioned that it will offer the XPS 13 with the less expensive and more energy-efficient i3 CPU but so far I have not seen a price.

Dimensions

The Dell XPS 13 really aims to impress the market with its design and choice of construction materials. It measures only 18 mm (0.24 inches) at its thickest point and tapers down all the way to 6mm (0.7 inches). That’s thinner than the MacBook Air! Dell also fits the XPS 13 with a display which has almost no bezel giving the laptop or ultrabook the overall dimensions which are closer to a 12 or even 11-inch notebook. Something Dell calls a 13-inch ultrabook in a 12-inch form factor.

The choice of materials are pleasing to the eye and also make the Dell XPS feel sturdy and durable. The machined-aluminum case is what gives the Dell XPS 13 that slick metallic look. While the bottom of the laptop uses racy carbon fiber. With these materials, which are more at home on a Formula 1 race car than a notebook, the overall weight of the Dell XPS 13 is just shy of 3 pounds, 2.99 pounds to be exact. In addition to bringing the weight down the carbon fiber feels a lot cooler to the touch which makes laptop computing cooler, literally.

Display

The edge to edge ultra-thin bezel allows the XPS 13 to feel much smaller than a 13-inch display laptop is supposed to through the use of gorilla glass. This is the same stuff we find on Apple iPhone and touch screen smartphones as well as the iPad and tablets. This tough material also makes the display ultra-stiff and scratch-resistant, where other ultrabooks such as the Toshiba Portege z830 and Z835 have flimsy displays. Unfortunately the Dell XPS 13 ships with the standard 1360 x 768 display. Although the pixels are sufficient, a display with more pixels like the 1600 x 900 found on the Asus Zenbook UX31E or 1440 × 900 on the MacBook Air allows for better multitasking.

Hardware

The Dell XPS 13 has a few configurations. It can be configured with an Intel i3, i5, or i7 CPU. Although so far, I have only seen the i5 and i7 offered from the Dell website. You also have the choice of a 128 GB or 256 GB Solid State Drive (SSD). Those are really the only choices. 4 GB of DDR3 SD RAM at 1333MHz and the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics come standard and can not be upgraded.

Boot times

The great thing about the Dell XPS 13 and ultrabooks, in general, is that they use solid-state drives. Because there are no moving parts, access to data on them is extremely fast, as well as the read and write times. They also use considerably less power than a standard disk hard drive which lessens the load on the battery. This translates into an overall increase in perceived speed and snappiness in general computing tasks. This can be seen when resuming from sleep which only takes 1.5 seconds, from hibernation 12 seconds, and the time it takes to cold boot Windows 7 a mere 17 seconds. Intel calls this Intel Rapid Start Technology.

Battery

Mobile computing is one thing that ultrabooks really try to improve. The Dell XPS 13 delivers this with a battery run-time of 8 hours and 53 minutes, according to the Mobile Mark 2007 benchmark. This test was done with the Intel i5-2467 CPU so expect a little less run-time with the more powerful i7 and a little more with the weaker i3. The battery is a 6 cell built-in 47 WHr which cannot be changed by the user.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Dell’s inputs really uphold the great fit and finish. The chiclet-style keyboard is full size and backlit. It has a good feel and is easy to type on. Dell got it right here. The touchpad is smooth glass with integrated buttons. This allows you to click virtually anywhere much like the one found on the MacBook Air. The touchpad also supports multitouch gestures. Scroll, zoom, drag, and drop are all done using intuitive multitouch gestures.

Sound

The Dell XPS 13 uses the Waves MaxxAudio 4. The sound is good and has decent bass, considering the compact size, thanks to the speakers being positioned on the bottom which helps resonate the sound.

Connectivity

The Dell XPS 13 really sticks to its minimalism mantra here having only the bare minimum inputs. There is a mini display which requires an adaptor for full-size HDMI or VGA connectivity. In addition, there is one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, and an audio jack. The USB has something called power share which allows you to charge devices such as mobile phones even when the laptop is off. The Dell XPS 13 also has a 1.3 MP integrated camera.

Software

Dell has introduced something called Intel Smart Connect technology. What this does is periodically wake the XPS 13 to refresh applications as well as web applications such as email, calendar, Facebook, and Twitter.
